The Imposter State of Mind
Have you heard of imposter syndrome? It’s an unpleasant cocktail of insecurity and fear inside you, which is growing bigger and bigger. In other words, you feel increasingly insecure about your talents. In contrast, other people find you very qualified in what you’re doing. It makes you feel like a fraud, you cannot be as good as they all think, and soon they will find out. You feel the fear of being exposed any moment now. You will understand that this will not help you in your career. It will not help you in your performance or your development. No worries, I have been there and overcame this syndrome. That’s why I don’t like the word syndrome because it implies it’s an illness, but it isn’t! You don’t have to say, “Okay, this is just my illness, and this is how I am”. No!
It’s not an illness
We should call it the Imposter State of Mind! Because, you know what, when it is the imposter state of mind, it implies it’s about you and your state of mind. And what have we learnt in the last few decades? We can really do something about that state of mind. We can now improve our state of mind. So, the imposter state of mind can be turned around!
